City of Newburgh Announces Rent Relief Program

POSTED ON: APRIL 9, 2021 – 9:49AM

The City of Newburgh is pleased to announce the COVID Rent Relief program tailored to provide rental assistance to low- and moderate-income residents who have experienced a substantial reduction in income and have struggled to pay their rent due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The Rental Relief Program, to be administered by Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, will provide up to a maximum of three months’ unpaid rent, including past due rent and forward rent. Payment will be made directly to the landlord or property owner after the tenant’s screening for the program has been completed and eligibility has been demonstrated.

“I am very proud of our Executive staff, City Manager, City Council and Planning Department for working with me and our Federal Partners to make these funds available for local municipalities in our region and in Newburgh. Thank you and congratulations to Legal Services of the Hudson Valley for being selected to administer the federal funds provided to us for residents in need rent assistance due to the COVID-19 pandemic.  Legal Services of the Hudson Valley has an excellent track record in dealing with the housing and legal needs of those in our community who have been voiceless for decades. Again, I am very proud of this super important collaboration. These funds are gravely needed by so many Newburgh residents,” said Mayor Torrance Harvey.

“Legal Services of the Hudson Valley is pleased to partner with the City of Newburgh on this important initiative. COVID-19 continues to dramatically impact our community. Because of the pandemic, many in the City of Newburgh are still struggling with loss of household income, impacting their ability to pay rent. We encourage households who are facing potential eviction, or who have experienced a loss of income due to COVID-19, to contact us at 877-574-8529 for possible legal and financial assistance. We are stronger together, and you are not alone. Please reach out if you or someone you know needs help,” said Rachel Simons, Attorney in Charge at Legal Services of the Hudson Valley.

“We hope this program will begin to reduce some of the burden our residents and also small landlords are facing due to the continued economic crisis caused by COVID-19,” said Ellen Fillo, City of Newburgh Community Development Director.

The City will utilize funds provided from its allocation of Community Development Block Grant (CDBG), Cares Act Funding (CDBG-CV). The City of Newburgh CDBG-CV program has also funded the purchase of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), COVID Community Outreach programs, COVID Vaccine Appointment Rides for City of Newburgh residents, and Food Security initiatives, to ensure City of Newburgh residents have access to meals, pantry items and fresh produce during the pandemic.

The Rent Relief program is immediately available, and City of Newburgh rental tenants should contact Legal Services of the Hudson Valley, (877) 574-8529, to complete eligibility screening for the program.
