Americorps VISTA - Westchester County 

The Veterans and Military Families Advocacy Project looks to serve veterans, especially female veterans, in Westchester County. the Project will provide outreach, information, legal advice and representation to active military and veteran families.


The AmeriCorps VISTA member will help further the goals for the Advocacy Project by conducting outreach, establishing community linkages with potential sources of referrals, identifying potential funding sources, and recruiting and training pro bono attorneys. The member will also establish community linkages with service providers that can serve veterans, develop intake/assessment tools and processes; help recruit and train at least 4 pro bono attorneys to expand the project’s reach; identify potential funding sources to sustain and expand the project.


A successful AmeriCorps VISTA member will have excellent written and oral communication, time management skills, the ability to plan execute tasks independently, ability to work well with diverse groups including veterans with mental and physical disabilities, as well as their own vehicle for transportation. Key skills for a VISTA member serving with Legal Services of Hudson Valley are a passion for service, sensitivity to diverse populations, ability to work independently, forward thinking, detail oriented, and well organized.

Americorps VISTA - Dutchess County

.The Veterans and Military Families Advocacy Project looks to serve veterans  in Dutchess County. The Project will provide outreach, information, legal advice and representation to active military and veteran families. LSHV is looking for more opportunities to expand its first year's successful model to other parts of its Hudson Valley service area by using the replicable plan from its Westchester veterans project to take the lead in the proposed veterans task force.


The VISTA member serving with Legal Services of the Hudson Valley in Poughkeepsie, NY will help firmly establish the Dutchess County Veterans task force whose goal is to provide Dutchess County Veterans with needed services. The member will lay a solid foundation for the proposed task force by conducting outreach, developing linkages and further developing the intake/assessment tools and resources. The member will also enhance the project's sustainability by helping to develop additional pro bono volunteers (attorneys) and identify additional potential funding sources.
