What to Expect

  • Intake:
    • – You will first talk to a paralegal on the phone. The paralegal will ask you questions about your case and will find out if you meet our financial eligibility requirements.
    • – If you complete an online intake, a paralegal will contact you within 1-2 business days to find out more about your case
    • – Be sure to have any paperwork, documents, or information that is relevant to your legal matter available when you call
    • – Be prepared to answer questions about yourself, your household, your finances, and the legal issue you are seeking assistance with
    • – We typically serve individuals and families whose incomes are less than 200% of the federal poverty guideline levels ($48,600 for a family of four in 2016), although there are some exceptions depending on the type of legal issue
    • – There are some types of cases that our office does not handle. If we are not able to provide services because of income or legal ineligibility, we will do our best to refer you to another agency for assistance
  • If Your Case Is Opened:
    • – And you meet our eligibility requirements, your case will be assigned to an attorney
    • – The attorney will review your case, may contact you with further questions, and will determine the appropriate level of services to provide
  • Types of Services We Provide:
    • – Advice and counsel – consultation in person or by phone
    • – Full representation – an attorney or legal advocate in court or at a hearing at an official agency
    • – Community education – education about legal rights and responsibilities
    • – Sometimes, there are problems that do not have a legal solution. If that is the case, we will try to provide you with other helpful resources
  • Confidentiality:
    • – Your information is confidential at all points during our relationship and thereafter, according to attorney/client privilege
