Children’s Advocacy Unit
Legal Services of the Hudson Valley (LSHV) seeks to protect the rights of children by representing them in education, health care, public benefits and family matters. Our Children’s Advocacy Unit ensures that low income and poor children receive access to education and other services regardless of their families’ financial circumstances.
The Children’s Advocacy Unit provides both direct representation of children in administrative and court proceedings, and community education for families which provides them with the tools and skills to advocate on behalf of their own children. The Children’s Advocacy Unit is a privately funded model program that focuses on the unmet legal needs of economically disadvantaged children and youth in Westchester
and Dutchess
County. LSHV works with youth advocacy groups and professionals to make certain that children and their families receive appropriate services.
Advocacy for disabled children :: LSHV represents children with disabilities to ensure that they receive appropriate services and benefits, such as Children’s Supplemental Security Income (SSI). These benefits enable children to obtain private tutoring, medical equipment or services not covered by Medicaid or private health insurance.
Education advocacy, including special education :: Every child has the right to an appropriate education. LSHV attorneys represent children in all areas of education law, including special education advocacy. LSHV works with disabled children and their families to obtain free, appropriate education services as required by law.
Health care :: LSHV provides representation to children in order to ensure that they receive the services and health benefits consistent with their health care needs. LSHV pays special attention to at risk children who need services to lead healthy lives as independent adults.
Housing :: For low income children, adequate housing can make the difference between success and failure. LSHV represents children with special needs to make certain they live in appropriate housing situations.
Guardianships and Custody :: All children should live with families who can love and care for them. LSHV ensures that children are placed with the guardians or caregivers who best meet their needs.
